And these labyrinths are hiding many different life forms such as different types of birds, fishes, turtles and blue crab. The area is also well-known by the 1951 made film “African Queen” which was filmed in here.
The ancient city of Kaunos was built in 400 BC. The city was a popular and important trade city of Lycia and the rock tombs are caved over 2000 years ago. The ruins of the ancient city is 1 km away from town centre and easy to reach by car and boats touring on the river.
Iztuzu is one of the most spectacular sandy beach of Turkey as it was chosen the “Best Beach Destination of Europe” by the Dutch holiday website “Zoover”. The whole area was at the edge of destruction by a hotel project which was stopped by the Government and the Prime Minister of Turkey at the time. With the request of “Prince Philip” the area got protected by the foundation of government called “Environmental Protection Agency for Special Areas”. Caretta Caretta turtles are being protected and watched by international organizations.
